FDA food registration for USA imports
23/05/2023
Guide for importing food into the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires food facilities to register with the agency. Here's an overview of the FDA food registration process for imports:
- Determine Registration Requirements: Identify if your food and or logistics facility is required to register with the FDA. Generally, most foreign food facilities that manufacture, process, pack, or hold food products intended for consumption in the United States are required to register, with a few exceptions.
- Obtain a DUNS Number: Obtain a Dun & Bradstreet Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number. The DUNS number is a unique identifier for your business, and it's free to obtain. You can apply for a DUNS number through the Dun & Bradstreet website (www.dnb.com).
- Create an FDA Online Account: Create an account in the FDA's Food Facility Registration Module (FFRM) online system. This account will allow you to submit your US registration application and manage your facility's information.
- Complete the FDA Food Facility Registration: Log in to the FDA's FFRM system and complete the registration application. You'll need to provide information about your food facility, such as the name and address, contact information, the type of activity conducted, and details about the food products you intend to import to the USA.
- Assign a U.S. Agent: Foreign food facilities are required to designate a U.S. Agent for FDA communications. The U.S. Agent serves as a point of contact between the FDA and the foreign facility. The agent can be an individual, a company, or an organization that resides or maintains a place of business in the United States.
- Submit the Registration: After completing the registration application and providing all necessary information, submit the registration electronically through the FDA's FFRM system.
- FDA Confirmation and Registration Number: Once the FDA receives and processes your registration, they will assign a registration number to your facility. The confirmation and registration number will be provided to you electronically.
It's important to note that registration with the FDA is just one aspect of complying with U.S. food import regulations. Additional requirements, such as adhering to specific labeling, packaging, and safety standards, may apply depending on the type of food being imported. It's advisable to consult with an FDA regulatory expert or FuturePro (UK or USA) for assistance to ensure full compliance with the applicable regulations.
